Meet Matt Switanek

December 3, 2018

PSD welcomes CIRES research scientist Matt Switanek, who began working with the Attribution and Predictability Assessments team on November 1. Matt’s project will focus on different sources of S2S (subseasonal to seasonal) predictability of precipitation for the state of California. The project will evaluate the skillfulness of ECMWF’s long-lead reforecast data, and explore the links between California precipitation and phenomena such as the Madden Julian Oscillation, the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, and the El Niño Southern Oscillation. Ultimately, the project aims to leverage these tools in order to provide operational extended range probabilistic forecast guidance for precipitation over California.

After receiving his Ph.D. in hydrometeorology from the University of Arizona, Matt most recently completed a postdoctoral position at the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change in Graz, Austria.

When not at work, Matt can be found spending time with his two young children, trail running or rock climbing.
