CIRES research associate Laura Slivinski began working in PSD's Dynamics and Multiscale Interactions Team this past September, under the supervision of Gil Compo. Along with Jeff Whitaker, they are working on creating the latest version of the 20th Century Reanalysis, a 6-hourly, 150-year time series of the weather generated by assimilating conventional pressure observations. This time series also provides estimates of uncertainty, which can then be used for statistical investigations of climate and weather events. Laura's research interests generally lie in the field of data assimilation. She is particularly interested in Lagrangian data assimilation, in which drifter/tracer trajectories are assimilated in order to estimate an underlying flow field. However, she is currently excited to work on a project with direct relevance to climate change issues.

Laura received her PhD in Applied Math from Brown University, and went on to do a short postdoc at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where she got her first taste of gathering and assimilating real-world observations.

On a personal note, Laura says that as much as she likes New England, she is happy to be in Colorado now, where there is plenty of access to hiking, trail running, and rock climbing.
