Abstract

Two large air quality studies involving four aircraft and extensive ground based measurements were conducted in the Northern Colorado Front Range in the summer of 2014: the NCAR/NSF/State of Colorado Front Range Air Pollution and Photochemistry Éxperiment (FRAPPÉ) and the 4th deployment of the NASA DISCOVER-AQ. The Front Range counties have been in marginal non-compliance with the NAAQS for ozone, possibly advancing to moderate with the new ozone standards. Sources for ozone and particulate precursors are typical urban emissions with the addition of a rapidly expanding oil and natural gas sector as well as animal feedlots. Terrain driven meteorology is complex and hard to simulate even in high resolution models. This presentation will give an overview of the study, and present some early results and first modeling studies, which are mainly focused around Front Range dynamics, ozone production and source attribution.
