On January 9, 1972, Mauna Loa Observatory held an open house to celebrate its 15th Anniversary. About 200 guests attended the open house. Donald Pack, director of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Division of Geophysical Monitoring for Climatic Change (now the ESRL) welcomed the guests. Dr. Rudolf Pueschel (director MLO) and staff members Howard Ellis, John Chin, Bernard Mendonca, and Dr. Barry Bodhaine demonstrated the equipment used for monitoring solar radiation, carbon dioxide, ozone, and condensation and freezing nuclei.
