Wave influence on tropical high cirrus clouds as observed by the Global Hawk​

Abstract

The Airborne Tropical TRopopause EXperiment (ATTREX) is a 5-year NASA mission to improve our understanding of physical and chemical processes in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL). The Global Hawk aircraft performed an extensive survey over the tropical Pacific with about 300 flight hours at altitudes of 14-19 km. Using the aircraft data, this study addresses one of the mission objectives: what controls tropical cirrus clouds and water vapor entering the stratosphere? Despite their significant feedback impacts on surface climate, cirrus clouds have been an important source of uncertainty in global climate models. Unprecedented observations by the Global Hawk have provided robust evidence of widespread wave influence on tropical cirrus occurrence, emphasizing the importance of proper representation of atmospheric waves in models.
