The National Blend of Models: What is it? What is PSL doing to support it?

Abstract

The National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) that underlies many of the NWS products is undergoing a major transformation; forecaster modification at the weather forecast office level will be de-emphasized, under the presumption that new centralized, post-processed weather guidance can be generated with dramatically improved quality. This centralized guidance (the "National Blend of Models" project) will be generated from multi-center ensemble and deterministic forecasts that have been post-processed to adjust for systematic errors. PSL's role is to supervise the post-processing efforts across NOAA and to act as a lead in the development of methods for the processing of precipitation data, including deterministic and probabilistic precipitation amounts, snowfall amounts, and precipitation type.
