The Near Shore Environment

COALA

The Coordinated Observations of the Arctic Lower Atmosphere (COALA) project took place at Oliktok Point, Alaska in October 2014. Our role in this project was to operate the DataHawk unmanned aircraft, designed in the University of Colorado Aerospace Engineering department, to gather measurements of near-surface atmospheric conditions.

Through this work, we are looking to improve our fundamental understanding of the interface between the atmosphere and the Earth's surface. The unmanned aircraft allowed us to fly at very low altitudes over a variety of surface types. As the photo above demonstrates, this includes newly-forming sea ice surfaces.
