Fine Grained Computing

A new generation of high-performance computing has emerged called Massively Parallel Fine Grain (MPFG).
Advance new HPCS technologies and develop techniques to enable the next-generation weather models to run efficiently on any type of next-generation HPCS architecture
Objectives
Prepare NWP software to run on current and future computer architectures both fine-grain GPU and/or MIC and advanced CPU systems
Customer/beneficiary
NWS
Milestones and deliverables
Completed preparing the Non-hydrostatic Icosahedral Model (NIM) to run on fine-grain computing architecture.
Key performance measures
Models or components (eg. dynamics, physics) coded to run on Fine-grain Computing systems including GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) and MIC (Many Integrated Core)
R&D maturity level
Research, development and/or application
