GSD/CIRA Arlene Laing to be Coordinating Director for the Caribbean Meteorological Organization

GSD/CIRA atmospheric scientist Dr. Arlene Laing has been appointed the Coordinating Director-Designate of the Caribbean Meteorological Organization (CMO), a coordinating agency of 16 English-speaking Caribbean Members. The CMO (http://www.cmo.org.tt/) coordinates scientific and technical activities including managing the Caribbean Regional Radar Project, providing joint training facilities, representing the region in international civil aviation matters, and working closely with regional disaster preparedness agencies.
As the Coordinating Director Designate, Dr. Laing will work with the current director from June until his retirement in November, at the CMO headquarters in Port of Spain, Trinidad. She will then assume the Director position and be the principal link to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), an organization that promotes economic integration and cooperation among its members. She will also represent the region in the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and other relevant groups to guide scientific and technical developments in the Caribbean.
Dr. Laing earned a bachelor’s degree in meteorology from the University of the West Indies and a master’s degree and doctoral degree in meteorology from Pennsylvania State University. She authored a peer-reviewed textbook on tropical meteorology, and most recently was lead-author for a chapter on Remote Sensing in the award-winning "Meteorology of Tropical West Africa: The Forecasters' Handbook." Laing joined the EDS branch of GSD in September, 2016.
