Supersized Science on a Sphere® to be built in Denmark

Ilustration depicting the Climate Planet event.

May 4, 2017

Earth System Research Laboratory’s Global Systems Division (GSD) will help install the largest Science on a Sphere ® (SOS) to date in Aarhaus, Denmark as part of the summer-long event “CLIMATE PLANET.” Aarhus is Denmark’s second-largest city and has been appointed European Capital of Culture in 2017. The exhibit is set to open on June 3, 2017.

The supersized SOS will be more than twice the size of standard six-foot diameter SOS’s, and hang inside a 25-meter temporary cage. Visitors will enter the exhibit and experience the same view astronauts can see through shuttle windows in space through live satellite transmissions on the SOS.

The exhibit has been developed in collaboration with NOAA and NASA to show a combined and complete view of the weather across the entire planet - all at once.
