Newly Updated Umkehr Ozone Profile Retrievals:
Data and Algorithm UMKV8

I. Petropavlovskikh (NOAA/CIRES) and P.K. Bhartia (NASA/Goddard)

NEW! 04/03/2007. Brewer Umkehr ozone profile retrieval algorithm BrUMK04 is available. The algorithm was modified from the Dobson Umkehr algorithm UMK04 to utilize Brewer zenith sky measurements at 310 and 326 nm channels. The software (umk04_br.f) is written in the Fortran language. To run it, an input file is required in the format similar to the Dobson N-value file (an example test.prn.txt file is provided at the ftp site). The N-values for the input file can be created by prepro.c software available from the WOUDC archive in Toronto, Canada (http://www.woudc.org/data_e.html, choose the LINK TO DATA ARCHIVE button, OK the data use agreement, and then follow the link Software/Analysis-QA/Umkehr/Brewer/newumk).

12/03/2004. UMKV8 retrieved, a priori and final residuals were updated to extend time-series through June 2004.

12/08/2004. UMK92 retrieved and a priori data were updated to extend time-series through June 2004.

12/08/2004. Arosa data had been re-processed to correct for some instrumental shifts in Umkehr time series (contact Dr. Eliane Maillard-Schaller (MeteoSwiss) for additional details).

01/13/2005. Data with cloud corrections had been eliminated from updated Arosa data (contact Dr. Eliane Maillard-Schaller (MeteoSwiss) for additional details).

What is new:

1) New a priori ozone information:

Readme fileData
a) based on updated ozone climatology by NASA/Goddard (private communication with G. Labow )
b) higher spatial resolution (10-degree latitude bins, 14 bins from 70 S to 70 N)
c) only seasonal cycle, does not depend on total ozone

2) Updated forward model (readme file)
  a) new standard ozone profiles, representative of typical ozone distribution at low, middle, and high latitudes (the same as in SBUV V8 algorithm)
  b) tabulated multiple-scattering correction for N-values
  c) tabulated refraction correction for N-values
  d) tabulated multiple-scattering correction for Jacobian
  e) tabulated data of spectrally resolved extra-terrestrial solar flux (SUSIM satellite data), C-pair Dobson slit functions, ozone absorption (Bass-Paur temperature dependent fit), and Rayleigh scattering coefficients

3) Updated inverse model
  a) ozone profile retrieval in 61-layers (vertical layer resolution is a quarter of the standard Umkehr layer)
  b) Rodgers a priori covariance matrix
  c) Solar Zenith Angle dependent error covariance matrix
  d) linear in ozone retrieval
