Region

Annual Methane Emissions. The bars in these figures represent total annual methane emissions in TgCH4/yr (teragrams of methane per year) for the selected region. The figure on the left shows posterior estimated emissions, and the figure on the right shows prior estimates from emission inventories and models of natural emissions. Microbial emissions ( blue ) are due to emissions from natural sources (mainly wetlands) and agriculture and waste. Fossil emissions ( orange ) are due to oil and gas production and transport and coal. Biomass burning ( green ) is a smaller contribution to annual methane emissions. Error bars show annual 1-σ (standard deviation) uncertainty estimates for each source category.

Tabulated Results. Annual emissions in TgCH4/yr for the selected region, by source. "Prior" and "Posterior" refer to estimated emissions before and after assimilation of atmospheric observations. The estimated uncertainties are 1-σ confidence intervals. The columns labeled "Prior Total" and "Posterior Total" show the sums of the individual source categories.

Monthly Emissions. (Top) Total monthly methane emissions in TgCH4/yr for the selected region. The blue curve and light blue shaded regions show estimated emissions and 1-σ uncertainty bounds after assimilation of atmospheric observations. The red curve and orange shaded regions show estimated emissions and 1-σ uncertainty bounds from inventories and models of natural emissions used as prior estimates of emissions. (Bottom Figures) Same as above except for each source category (microbial, fossil fuel and biomass burning).

Monthly Emission Anomalies. (Top) Total monthly methane emission anomalies in TgCH4/yr for the selected region. The blue curve and light blue shaded regions show estimated emission anomalies and 1-σ uncertainty bounds after assimilation of atmospheric observations. The red curve and orange shaded regions show estimated emission anomalies and 1-σ uncertainty bounds from inventories and models of natural emissions used as prior estimates of emissions. (Bottom Figures) Same as above except for each source category (microbial, fossil fuel and biomass burning). Emission anomalies are calculate with respect monthly means over the entire period (1997-2021).
