An Overview of Research Activities at NCEP's Hydrologic Prediction Center

The overall goal of the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center (HPC) Hydrometeorological Testbed (HMT) is to improve operational precipitation prediction and services for hydrologic, emergency management and other communities and for the public with focus on both warm- and cool season precipitation in the time ranges of six hours to one week. HPC/HMT was established to help evaluate new methods/ technology that might be useful in HPC operations. How HPC plans to meet these objectives will be briefly discussed. Recent HPC/HMT initiatives will be presented; these primarily have been concentrated in three different areas: 1) investigating how normalized anomalies of various variables might be used to help identify possible rare meteorological events including extreme rainfall, 2) working with Jeff Whitaker and Tom Hamill to get their analog technique for PQPF running on the NCEP computers, 3) developing a web-based heavy rainfall forecasting training manual. A summary of this work will be offered.
