Penland C. and L. Matrosova (May 2008): A Southern Hemisphere footprint in American Midwest precipitation. Geophys. Res. Lett., 35 (9), L09703. doi:10.1029/2008GL033612Full text not available from this repository.
A non-normal filter is used to isolate the El Niño signal in tropical south Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs). In boreal fall, the resulting index is significantly anticorrelated with precipitation in the American Midwest two to three seasons later. The phenomenological reasons for the relationship are explored in this article.
