Wind barbs show the wind speed and direction at each height and time. Height is shown in km above mean sea level (km ASL) and date and time are Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Wind direction is along the barb towards the center point, and wind speed (rounded to the nearest 5.0 m/s) is shown by a combination of flags, staffs, and half staffs, each representing 50, 10, and 5 m/s. Color is also used to indicate the wind speed, according to the following table: wind color bar

Thus, NW wind barb is a 7.5 to 10.0 m/s wind from the northwest while SW wind barb is a 10.0 to 12.5 m/s wind from the southwest. More information on interpreting wind barbs.
