BiographyRichard Lataitis joined the NOAA Wave Propagation Laboratory (WPL) as a student in 1979. His early work included the development of theories related to the propagation of electromagnetic and acoustic waves through random media as applied to the remote sensing of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans. In 1993, WPL was rechristened the Environmental Technology Laboratory (ETL) to reflect a broader applied research mission, and Richard's interests turned toward radar scattering theory and signal processing methods related to wind profiler radars, including the Radio Acoustic Sounding System (RASS) measurement of temperature profiles, which formed the basis of his Ph.D. thesis. Richard was appointed Deputy Director of ETL in 2001, and continues to serve in a similar capacity today within the Physical Sciences Division (PSD) of the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory. PSD was created in 2005 from components of the former NOAA ETL, NOAA Climate Diagnostics Center, and NOAA Aeronomy Laboratory. |
