"Web Activities Using Scientific Data," A web publication by the NOAA Space Environment Center, has teaching modules which include webpages and use of data on
- Weather and Climate (Activity 4), including El Nino and locating and tracking icebergs using U.S. Coast Guard data
- Hazards (Activity 7), including an earthquake activity which involves getting data from the Web and plotting it.
- Winds (Activity 8), which takes you to a site to look at upper air winds
- Greenhouse Gases (Activity 9)
NOAA Year of the Ocean Kids and Teachers Resources mostly for junior high and younger students
The Human Dimensions of Global Change -- active learning modules from the Association of American Geographers.
Online Teaching Resources from the NOAA/Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. These modules seem to be aimed at about middle school, and include units on El Nino, Storms, the Great Lakes, the Atmosphere (Ozone, Solar Events, Greenhouse Gases), etc. Also included technical info on how to download the necessary files, and Teacher Info to help you prepare.
The Geography Web has Web-based instructional materials related to natural hazards. You might also want to look at the Geography Web resources section that has a lot of links to teaching resources for geography -- many of which have broader usefulness.
- Boulder Creek Virtual Field Study on the potential hazards of a flood on the urban-aquatic resource that runs through town; this activity was designed for students who could not actually take a field trip to the creek.
- Flood Hazards of Manitou springs, CO is another "virtual field trip" to learn about the settlement history and natural hazards of Manitou Springs, understand what could happen to Manitou Springs during and after a catastrophic flood event, and identify areas of the town that are at risk.
- Mount Ranier: an Interactive Learning Module looks at volcano hazards of this and other volcanoes.
Education uses of NCEP Reanalysis atlas, this page suggests how this on-line atlas can be used to help teach meteorological concepts, as presented in a talk the year at the American Meteorological Society conference. Examples for investiations of El Nino are also given.
Science Education pages from the NOAA National Data Buoy Center
EPA on-line teaching aids include activities and experiments on air and water issues.
