The least damped empirical mode evaluated from the seasonally smoothed SST anomalies in the global tropical strip is a real structure (no imaginary component) as shown (see website Trend. ). The times series indices in this section consist of the contributions from the sum of the normal modes dominating the optimal structure and the time series coefficient of the trend mode (see Penland and Matrosova 2004).
