GSD Signs Agreement with Australian Bureau of Meteorology to Transfer Technology
On Friday, 24 March 2006, NWS Director, D.L. Johnson, signed an International Agreement between the United States and Australian governments for cooperative work in weather forecasting. At the same meeting in Melbourne, Australia, Global Systems Division's (GSD) Carl Bullock signed an Implementing Arrangement with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) to effect a transfer of the Graphical Forecast Editor (GFE) technology to BoM. The two-year agreement calls for staff of GSD's Information Systems Branch to tailor the GFE for use by the BoM.
The GFE comprises a suite of visualization and graphical editing tools that is used operationally by NWS forecasters to prepare a gridded database of weather forecast elements (e.g., temperature, clouds, winds, precipitation) that forms the basis for many forecast products. The forecast grids from all NWS Weather Forecast Offices are combined into a National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD). NWS will also transfer this technology to BoM under the agreement signed this week.
These agreements support and promote international collaboration and cooperation and maximize our mutual benefits regarding weather forecasting.
