The Experimental Regional Ensemble Forecast System (ExREF)

The Experimental Regional Ensemble Forecast (ExREF) system is a tool for developing and testing new Numerical Weather Prediction methodologies. It is a joint project between ESRL/GSD, the Hydrometeorological Testbed, and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction.

OAR Data Sharing and Research Collaborations with EIG EUMETNET

NOAA and the European Meteorological Services Network are now exchanging GPS-Met data on a routine basis, contributing to improved weather and climate forecasting and research.

OAR Contributes to Improved Understanding of Precipitation in the Amazon
ESRL scientists participated in a study of how convective precipitation events occur in the Equatorial Amazon Rain Forest. The transition from shallow cumulus fields to precipitating cumulonimbus is detectable in high temporal resolution GPS-Met water vapor measurements.

GSD's Contributions to Summer 2013 Intensive Field Studies

In support of two intensive field studies in the Southeast U.S., GSD's Assimilation and Modeling Branch provided forecasts of air quality and weather using the state-of-the-art fully coupled Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with the addition of chemistry (known as the WRF-Chem application).
