Lauder is in the Central Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand, as depicted by the arrowhead at the base of the red box.
Balloons with radiosondes and ozonesondes have been launched from Lauder since 1986 with the cooperation of New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). In 2004 we added twice-monthly flights of the NOAA FPH, radiosondes and ozonesondes. We supply instruments and balloons to the Lauder site, then NIWA personnel prepare and launch them.
Thanks to Paul Johnston and the Lauder staff of NIWA for their efforts in launching our water vapor sondes.
Our water vapor measurements in New Zealand are supported by NOAA’s U.S. Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Program.
