In the fall of 1986, a 126ft (40m) tower was built at the observatory. This tower replaced the 88ft tower and is much safer to climb. Air inlet lines for the NOAA ESRL carbon cycle group, Scripps, and NOAA group were installed at different levels on the tower. Wind and temperature were also set up at different levels and data was sent back to the main building for archiving.
