On January 28,1978, MLO commemorated its 20th anniversary with a celebration at the observatory.

The Honorable Daniel Akaka, U.S. Representative of Hawaii and Dr. Lester Machta, Director of Air Resource Laboratories addressed the gathering.

The Reverend Edward Kealanahele blessed the observatory, staff members, and visitors participating in the celebration.
