Activation of Continental Chloride by Reactive Oxides of Nitrogen in wInter tiMe (ACCRONIM)
Various instruments at ground site.
Investigators in this project include researchers from NOAA/ESRL Chemical Sciences Division, and University of Washington.
The goal is to measure the conversion of NOx to ClNO2 by uptake of N2O5 to chloride containing aerosol at a mid-continental site. This chemistry is known to occur in marine environments where sea salt provides a chloride aerosol source. Quantification of potential mid-continent ClNO2 production will give a better estimate for the local, regional and possibly global significance of halogen activation from nitrogen oxides.
