WP-3D Daily Summaries

7/15/04 WP-3D Flight Summary (Preliminary Observations)

The flight fulfilled all the planned objectives. Between approximately 14:45 GMT and 16:10 GMT the plume that originated from the Eastern US was intercepted at 60 W. Visible satellite imagery was helpful in establishing the exact location of the plume.

Later in the flight after about 18:30 GMT, the NY city plume was sampled extensively. It was a very well defined plume located exactly where it was predicted. The aircraft made cross-sections and spirals through the plume. The two ballooning groups launched smart balloons, one in the morning and the second in the afternoon (you can see their actual flight tracks on the respective web pages on the UMass Balloon Web site and the UNH SmartBalloon Web Site). The morning balloon carried an O3 instrument on board. This balloon, which was traveling close to the centerline of the New York plume, was visited by the P-3 late in the afternoon. The O3 instrument onboard this Lagrangian platform recorded O3 formation that occurred in the plume. The balloon-borne ozone measurements observations will be compared with the ozone, ozone precursor, radical measurements and radiation measurements that were being made on the P3. These observations will provide an excellent test of the understanding of ozone evolution in an urban plume.
